ABC's of Kindergarten
Arrival- Students can arrive at 7:40 a.m. if they will be eating breakfast at school. Children not eating breakfast may arrive beginning at 7:45 a.m. The bell will ring at 8:00 for all students to be in class.
Book bag-Many important messages will be coming home from school, and this is the way I will communicate with you in many cases. If your child is bringing a note from home, please have your child physically put the note in his/her bag. This action helps him/her remember that there is a note in their book bag!
Birthdays- If you would like to bring a favor, please let me know. We have 24 students. We will observe summer birthdays in May or you can contact me to celebrate your child’s half birthday.
Communication between home and school is very important. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to send a note to school or email me at [email protected]. I will get back to you as soon as I can.
Conferences are held in the Fall and Spring. I will meet with you and share your child’s progress.
Dismissal- all students will be dismissed at 2:25. I will walk bus riders out, then proceed to the cafeteria to dismiss walkers/car riders at the west doors. You will receive a card with your last name, if you would like me to send your child out, please place this card on your dash and Mr. Hurley or Mrs. Davis will radio me. If you would like to get out of your car, please park in the lot.
Early dismissal- If there is an early dismissal, late start, or a day of no school you should receive a phone call through the district’s school reach program. You may also look in your parent handbook for a listing of radio and television stations to get this information.
Folder’s-Daily papers will be sent home in one of your child’s Folders.
Grading Scale - Report cards will follow this scale:
4-Advanced Skill Demonstration
3-Skill Attainment
2-Approaching Skill Attainment
1-Beginning Skill Attainment
Homework will be sent home when it is meaningful and compliments our lessons. It will have a family participation focus including literacy and math.
Handwriting-We use Zaner Bloser handwriting in the Olympia School District.
Ill -Please do not send your child to school if he/she has a temperature. If your child becomes ill during the school day, you will be called to come get your child. You can request make-up work from the office, please note that many of our activities are workshop based which can only be done in the classroom.
Independence- We will be working on your child’s independence. He/she will be required to turn in homework, notes from home, etc. as well as other independent skills we will learn throughout the year.
Join the Olympia North PTO. This is a great way to be involved in your child’s school and a great way to meet other parents. Meetings are held once a month in the evening. Please check the school calendar for dates.
K is for Kindergarten!
Library and Lab-We will go to the library once a week. The children may have one book at a time checked out of the library. We will go to the flexible learning center 3 times each week.
Money is difficult for a kindergartner to keep track of. If your child needs to bring money to school, please send it in a sealed, labeled envelope so that there is no confusion as to what the money is for.
Newsletters will be sent home most Fridays in your child’s folder. This will inform you all of the things we have been working on in class and what our upcoming activities will be.
Outside-Weather permitting, students will be going outside for a brief recess after lunch. Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately.
Party-We will have a Christmas and Valentine’s Party! We will also have Apple and Pumpkin Days where we will be looking for parent helpers!
Questions-Always let me know if you have questions or concerns regarding your child’s education.
Reading is very important. Read to your child daily and let your child see you read daily, too!
Report Cards-Your child will receive four report cards.
Shoes- Please make sure that your child wears tennis shoes to school or keeps a pair in his/her backpack. Your child will not be allowed to participate in P.E. if he/she is not wearing tennis shoes.
Tie-please help your child learn how to tie his/her shoes.
Transportation- If you have a change for the end of the day, you MUST call the school or send a note. Please do not rely on email in the event that I won’t receive it in time or if am absent that day. I will not let your child go with another adult or a different way unless you have notified me. I hope you understand this is for your child’s safety.
Toys-Please do not send additional toys to school with your child. If for some reason I ask your child to bring a toy to school I will include this information in my newsletter.
Understanding-Your child is important to me! I will always treat your child with lots of respect and understanding.
Visitors-You must always sign in at the office and get a visitor’s sticker. Remember – not everyone knows who you are. Your child’s safety is our first concern. If you are planning on coming past the drop off point in the morning, you will have to stop at the office and receive a visitor’s sticker.
Wear-Please have your child wear practical clothes to school. Please remember shorts under dresses.
EXtra-We have extra clothes in the office if your child has an accident, etc. Since we have a limited supply, we ask that these clothes be washed and returned as soon as possible.
You-Please remember that you are your child’s first and most important teacher. No one can influence your child’s life in the way that you can!
Zoom! Sit back and watch your child’s skills take off! You will be amazed and surprised at the changes this year!
